Dane Specifications
Please keep in mind that we have no control over the ages/colors/specifics of our rescue Danes. The more specific you are, the harder it may be to place a dog with you. Please remember that older dogs need a good home too and can provide years of unconditional love.
Please help us choose the Dane's Age and Gender and Appearance that is the best match for our household members and lifestyle!
Dane Mix:
As a general rule, the Great Danes that we have available for adoption are from Harlequin breeding--these include Black (with or without white markings), Merles (with or without white markings), Harlequins, and Whites. Somewhat over half of the Danes we receive have natural ears, and of those Danes whose ears have been cropped, many do not stand. The waiting period for, for example, an adolescent Fawn female, with ears cropped and standing, could range anywhere from two weeks to as long as 12 months or more.
Age:
Senior -- Age 6 and older. As a general rule, the seniors we have available for adoption have been well-cared-for, are housetrained and have good house manners. All our seniors have a thorough physical examination, and we will be happy to discuss any health issues (such as a need for medication or supplements) or management (for example, a Dane that needs assistance to get into an SUV.) We do have a reduced adoption donation for our very special Senior Danes
Adult -- Age 3 through 5. Generally more settled dogs, with many life skills in place. Level of obedience training varies from Dane to Dane, as do any behavioral quirks.
Young Adult -- 18 months to 36 months. Almost all Danes in this age group absolutely require group obedience lessons. This helps to establish a healthy bond between owner and dog, teaches the dog acceptable behaviors, and allows the dog to develop better dog-to-dog social skills.
Adolescent -- From 6 months to 18 months old. Although somewhat of a handful, these delightful young Danes are at a prime age to begin training for a "job" such as therapy work, competitive obedience, agility, or assistance work.
Puppy -- Danes less than six months old. Please note that we rarely get young puppies into Rescue, and will be happy to also offer referrals to a Great Dane Club in your area to assist you in finding a responsible, ethical breeder.
